Art to excel above and beyond...

To succeed you must stand out from the crowd. Here are six ways:

Be first with a purpose:

Don't just be the one who turns on or off the lights – be the one who gets in early or stays late in order to get things done. Not only will your performance stand out, you'll also start to...

 Be known for something specific:

Be known as the employee who responds quicker, acts faster, or always follows up.Pick a worthwhile mission, then excel at that mission. People will notice.

Create your own side project:

Experiment on a new process or service with a particular customer in mind. The customer will appreciate how you tried, without being asked, to better meet their needs, and your business will become "that business."

Put your muscle where your mouth is:

Everyone talks about problems. The people who help fix them stand out.

Show a little of your personal side:

Let people know a little about you; a few personal details add color and depth to your professional image.

Work harder than everyone else:

Nothing – nothing – is a substitute for hard work.

Winning Business Strategt...

What is Strategy?

Strategy is really about choices, and they define strategy simply as “an integrated set of choices that uniquely positions the firm in its industry so as to create sustainable advantage and superior value relative to the competition.”

“It is only through making and acting on choices that you can win,” they write. “Yes, clear, tough choices force your hand and confine you to a path. But they also free you to focus on what matters.

What matters is winning. Great organizations—whether companies, not-for-profits, political organizations, agencies, what have you—choose to win rather than simply play.”

At the heart of strategy lie two key choices:

1. Where to play?

Once you are clear on the goals, aspirations and purpose of your enterprise—the value you bring, why you exist and the problem you solve for the world—you must choose a playing field that allows you to achieve those aims.

Answering the “where to play” question helps narrow the competitive field and focuses on where your company will compete. It encompasses markets, customers and consumers, channels, product categories and vertical stages of your chosen industry.

2. How to win?

While answering the “Where to play” question selects the playing field, the “How to win” question defines the choices for winning on that field.

“It is the recipe for success,” the authors write. “The how-to-win choice is intimately tied to the where-to-play choice. Remember, it is not how to win generally, but how to win within the chosen where-to-play domains.”

To determine how to win, you must decide what will enable your company to create unique value and sustainably deliver that value to customers in a way that is distinct from the firm’s competitors.

Leadership Traits

Good bosses look good on paper. Great bosses look great in person; their action show their value. They are remarkable not because of what you see them do but what you don't see them do.

"If your actions inspire others to learn  more, dream more, do more and become more..then you are a leader" - Jim Rohn

Attitude & Behavior

The Betari Box

The Betari Box, seen in Figure1, is a model that helps us understand the impact that our own attitudes and behaviors have on the attitudes and behaviors of the people around us.
Our attitude plays a large role in the behavior we exhibit. When we're feeling motivated and positive, we smile, we compliment our team, and we empower those around us. When we're feeling negative, the reverse is often true – we can be impatient, we get angry at our people, and we might even yell or argue.

These behaviors often affect the people around us. They then turn those negative behaviors back on us, and the conflict gets worse.

Although the idea of the Betari Box is quite simple, understanding it can help people learn to recognize when they're stuck in a negative cycle.

Key Points

The Betari Box illustrates how our own attitudes and behaviors directly affect the attitudes and behaviors of people around us. When we're stuck in a negative cycle, then it's up to us to stop that cycle by changing our attitude. This will positively impact those around us – and therefore break the cycle.

Apply This to Your Life

  1. Remember that your attitude, good or bad, affects everyone around you.
  2. The next time you're in a negative mood, stop what you're doing. Take a few minutes to assess why you're feeling so negative. Negativity often begins with an insignificant event (like spilling coffee or getting stuck in traffic) and simply gets worse from there. Consciously decide to break out of the cycle by focusing on something positive.
  3. If a colleague is stuck in a negative cycle, then remember that you have a choice in how you respond. Just because that person is negative to you doesn't mean that you have to be negative back.
  4. If a team member is persistently grumpy and rude, explore the reasons for that negativity with them. Consider talking about the Betari box, and highlight the consequences of their behavior for team productivity and for their own quality of life.
  5. It's possible to get into downward spirals where someone is grumpy with you, you get defensive and grumpy back, and so on. Where you see this happen, see if you can agree to "press the reset button", and be pleasant to one-another.
  6. Practice empathy at work. Empathy can also get you out of a negative cycle once you're in it.
